Summary
The Academic Advisor works from a developmental framework, assessing students’ needs and assisting them with a broad array of academic and career-related issues. The Academic Advisor provides direct assistance to students and collaborates with colleagues to strengthen the effectiveness of advising services throughout the institution. The Advisor advocates and provides leadership for the development of advising initiatives, strategies to support degree completion and career readiness, and act as a CRM resource for all student services, and faculty training in CRM usage to facilitate student support and success. The Advisor also provides prevention and intervention strategies for students with academic difficulty. This Position reports directly to the Dean of Academic Support and Success. Some evening hours and/or travel to other sites are required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a resource and advocate for a caseload of students, assisting them in the development of academic, career, and transfer plans, including identification of strategies to support the successful achievement of their goals.
- Assist students in becoming self-directed in the educational and career exploration and planning processes.
- Assess individual student’s academic and career progress. Assist students in determining suitable developmental steps that will promote the establishment of realistic and attainable academic, transfer, and career goals, directing students to alternate majors/career options where appropriate.
- Maintain currency to ensure college compliance with federal immigration requirements for the enrollment of international students. Monitor and track students’ immigration status, and maintain all required documentation and records, accordingly.
- Work with students to complete an academic plan for graduation (using Degree Works and CRM Advise) that aligns with the individual’s needs and abilities, and provides options to satisfy degree requirements on time.
- Support enrollment/registration processes.
- Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for further career development and experiential learning opportunities, personal counseling; academic skills development and tutoring; financial aid; campus clubs; personal and leadership development opportunities, and any other areas that may appropriately assist the student in achieving his/her academic, career and transfer objectives.
- Identify options for students to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluate and make recommendations on petitions and adjustments to the student’s program of study.
- Help students to identify factors that may contribute to or detract from their academic/career progress.
- Assist students on Academic Alert, Probation, or Suspension to determine specific strategies to improve their academic success.
- Contribute to the continuing development of the Advising role in supporting students’ persistence, retention and completion through departmental and cross-departmental collaboration and committee work.
- Provide support for appointment scheduling and CRM student support technology systems as needed such as troubleshooting difficulties in the system, working with IT Department to resolve issues in a timely manner, communication to students through the CRM.
- Provide utilization data and reports from the CRM student system.
- Provide training to CRM users to support student success.
- Provide updates and suggestions for continual improvement of student support utilizing the CRM.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required
Education
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution required.
Certifications
- Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History, Act 114 FBI Clearance Fingerprinting)
Work Experience:
- Two years’ advising experience working at a college.
- Familiarity with the mission of a comprehensive community college.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to be a productive team member in a dynamic environment.
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills, understanding of academic processes, ability to learn and use administrative software, and ability to interact positively and pro-actively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
- Individual should be creative and resourceful, with the ability to establish collaborative relationships.
- Must possess a high level of the following work skills and behaviors: teamwork/cooperation; initiative, customer service, and commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual (Spanish).
- Experience working with college students in an advising capacity at a community college.
- Understanding of assessment practices in higher education.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
