Job Title:                    PT Career Specialist

FLSA Status:              Non Exempt

 Summary

The Career Specialist provides a variety of services and support to assist LCCC students in all phases of their career exploration, achievement of career related competencies, and job search.  Responsibilities include working directly with students to develop strategies that enhance their career development goals and employability.  The Career Specialist coordinates all work activities with college faculty and staff to support student development through the promotion of available services, encourages student engagement and facilitates achievement of the student’s career goals.  Will require travel to LCCC sites. Some evening hours are required. Reports directly to the Director of the Career Development and Civic Engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote student development by providing a variety of services to assist LCCC students at main campus and satellite locations in their career exploration, achievement of career related competencies, and job search.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic advisors and student success staff members to enhance students’ awareness, encourage exploration, and refine their goals, as appropriate.
  • Promote students’ career readiness by supporting their achievement of identified career specific competencies.  Collaborate with faculty, academic advisors and student support & success staff to assist students in identifying learning opportunities that will most directly support achievement of these competencies
  • Assist students as per their career goals with résumé development, cover letters, interviewing skills, and job search strategies for our alumni, non credit students and various programs of study
  • Assists faculty with preparation and set-up of ePortfolio ‘templates’ and classroom assignments
  • Manage and facilitate ePortfolio requirements in student employment
  • Maintains a database of student and faculty participation in the ePortfolio program
  • Plans, implements and encourages student participation in an annual ePortfolio Showcase
  • Stays current with employment trends
  • Actively facilitate and support student learning by applying student development theory in the implementation of all activities.
  • Foster students’ awareness of career development services through a variety of methods including, but not limited to mailings, emails, and classroom visits.
  • Collaborate with Career Development staff to coordinate and present a variety of in-person and virtual workshops and classroom presentations to promote career success.
  • Document students’ career/job placement status and progress, maintaining current notes in student files.
  • Complete and submit periodic progress and outcomes reports as requested.
  • Contribute to the continuing development of the Career Center through partnerships within the School of Student Support & Success, academic departments and other campus offices, as applicable.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Required:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution.

Certifications:

  • Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse history, Act 114 FBI Clearance fingerprinting).

Work Experience

  • Two years direct experience in career development or human resources/recruiting required.

 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Computer literacy is required including a strong background in Microsoft Office.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, strong sense of initiative, motivation and self-direction.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to interact positively with students, employers, faculty and staff in a professional manner.
  • A positive attitude, patience, service orientation and an awareness of the needs and concerns of varied populations.
  • Ability to lead by example; plan, organize and implement multiple projects and see projects through to successful conclusion.
  • Ability to function well in an atmosphere that promotes teamwork as well as initiative and independence.
  • Must possess a high level of commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in higher education
  • Spanish bi-lingual.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job,

the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust and focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
